Virginia Jakim is a Buenos Aires-born, Berlin-based designer and artist working on the revision of archetypical objects as carriers of cultural meaning and shared experiences. With a background in Fashion Design and Contemporary Jewellery, Jakim specializes in handmade objects in metal and has worked in different areas of Art and Design, from Costume to Interior Landscaping.
Her practice is based on the reinterpretation of wearable and everyday-life objects. The intentional use of their poetic potential and the evocative aspect of materials are at the center of her practice. With a tongue-in-cheek tone, Virginia re-designs known objects, remixing their elements to cause an alteration in the final product and its usability, one that bounces between funny, dreamy and eerie. In this gesture, she proposes a fresh gaze on the things that we take for granted and use them as trampolines to dwell on topics like desire, belonging, entertainment and power.
